Huge thanks to a multitude of folks in this thread that helped me flesh out the tutorial below - bitterkevin, El Zomba, Seraphis Cain, lodown, ohio4987, strongstylesean, thechon, Waterbug, and at NeoGAF - Zep , and if I'm missing someone - tell me and you're on this list.
Received a .VME file? Don't know what to do with it? Check out this post.
Want to transfer your save from your PSN/PS2 Classic version to PC/PS2? Check this post. Basically reverse the tutorial in this post, and instead of using the "Encrypt" tab and "Encrypt VME" button, use the "Decrypt" tab and the "Decrypt VME" button.
CAUTION:
Understand that when you replace any SCEVMC0.VME or SCEVMC1.VME files on a USB stick, you are REPLACING the virtual memory cards that currently exist. If you make a copy to USB from your own PS3 copy of FPR's .VME files, then turn around and download some .VME's available online to check out, once you copy the .VME you downloaded into the NPUD21702 folder and overwrite it, that virtual memory card is GONE.
Always make sure you back up your .VME files when swapping virutal memory cards & saves.
(For this tutorial, I'm going to convert the latest Fire Pro Community Person Pack from the 16.0 Main (4-19-13).zip file found here.)
Step 1 - Download the Tools
MemCardConvTools_v4.zip
PS2SaveConverter_0_030.zip
formattedmemcards.zip
PS3_directory.zip
For ease of following this tutorial, I recommend you find yourself a folder and extract these tools into it. When extracted, it should look like this:
Image
Step 2 - Find yourself a .max file
For ease of use, I've put my .max in the same folder:
Image
Step 3 - Convert from .max to .psu
Open up PS2SaveConverter.exe and you'll see the following software pop up:
Image
Click "Open", browse to your .max file, and select it. Once selected, the window should look like this:
Image
Click "Save", and for ease, save it into the same location as your .max:
Image
Step 4 - Use mymc-gui to load the .psu file into a clean/formatted .ps2 file
mymc-gui.exe is found in the MemCardConvTools_v4\tools\mymc directory:
Image
Once you open it, it will automatically ask you to browse for a .ps2 file. Go into the formattedmemcards directory and select Mcd001.ps2:
Image
The screen will now look like this:
Image
Click second icon near the top with the green arrow. This is the icon to import your .psu into the .ps2 with. Once clicked, find your .psu file:
Image
Once it loads, mymc-gui should look like this:
Image
Close mymc-gui.
Step 5 - Rename the .ps2 file to .vmc
Simple to do, your formattedmemcards folder should look like this:
Image
Step 6 - Encrypt the .vmc file
Find PS2Classics_GUI.exe in the MemCardConvTools_v4\tools directory:
Image
Open it and you'll see something like below. Select the Encrypt tab, and click the Encyrpt VMC button.
Spoiler: show
Image
Browse and find your .vmc file:
Image
It will immediately ask you where you want to save the .vme file, I'd recommend the formattedmemcards folder for now:
Image
The PS2Classics_GUI.exe should look similar to this when completed:
Image
Step 7 - Rename your .vme file
The formattedmemcards folder should look like this:
Image
Rename that Mcd001.vme file to SCEVMC0.VME (that's SCEVMC(zero).VME):
Image
NOTE: If you'd like for your newly created .VME to show up as the 2nd memory card on your PS3, make sure and name it SCEVMC1.VME).
Step 8 - Overwrite the virtual memory card data in the PS3 directory
Navigate to PS3\EXPORT\PS2SD\NPUD21702. Copy your newly renamed .VME into this folder. Overwrite when asked.
Image
Step 9 - Copy your PS3 folder to your FAT32 formatted USB Drive
Now you can copy the PS3 directory right in the main directory of your USB Drive:
Image
Enjoy it on your PS3!
Troubleshooting
If you get the following error when trying to run mymc-gui:
Image
Download this zip and place the MSVCP71.dll file in the MemCardConvTools_v4\tools\mymc directory, where mymc-gui.exe is located.
If you get the following error when trying to run PS2Classics_GUI:
Image
Download this zip and place the MSVBVM50.dll file in the MemCardConvTools_v4\tools directory, where PS2Classics_GUI.exe is located.
